They say Life is an uphill battle. We all have seasons in our lives where we struggle and have to fight with ourselves to get out of bed in the morning. When asked what keeps them going when the going gets tough, 13 People explain their main source of motivation to keep fighting.

“What keeps me going? I’m not sure. Pizza? Puppies?” -Ashley, 21

“My twin brother, we do a lot to keep each other going.” — Heather, 26

“The fear of my children seeing me defeated has always pushed me and kept me going. I wanted them to see that even if life doesn’t go your way you can still control the way you handle it.” — Anonymous, 38

“What keeps me going? My honest answer is my baby sister and my two younger brothers. Because someone has to raise them. I guess that was my job since the day they were born. Thank God they are almost grown because teenagers are exhausting.” — Sara, 29

“My son. Even on my worst days, he’s right there with that goofy four-toothed smile, excitedly waiting for me to sing him his favorite songs and play with him. The way he loves everyone he meets unconditionally fills my heart with hope. Seeing the world through his eyes is so exciting because he reminds me of all the little things in life that I take for granted. Some days I feel like giving up, but I have to keep going because there is nothing in this world more important to me than being there to watch him grow up.” — Sierra, 23

“Knowing that this feeling of struggle and sadness isn’t going to last forever.” — Jordan, 22

“Hope, hope that things will get better than they are, and that soon I can relax, quit my job and drink coffee in my backyard in the morning.” — Anonymous

“Liking myself a lot. Without that I’d be just like most people.” — Tyler, 24

“My boyfriend. He is always calming my anxiety and my overthinking. That, as well as the love I have for my family, and how bad I want my own family one day.” -Lauren, 24

“My friends are what keep me going. My weekends, and the time I spend with them out doing whatever it is we are doing that particular night.” -Kyle, 25

“Knowing that nothing is permanent. I have a limited time here. Things aren’t nearly as big as they seem in the grand scheme of things. Our lives have meaning because we give them meaning. It’s all about perception.” — Anonymous

“What other choice do I have? I’m not a quitter. Life can suck sometimes and throw curves at you that seem insurmountable, but we find a way to get through, and realize that even though the pain may change us, it doesn’t kill us. And we can’t/shouldn’t live our lives focused on the bad anyway. There is too much beauty and good in the world. It just gets overshadowed by the bad. Our number one mission or job in this world is to live our lives. That’s why we are here. Everyone’s path is different, but we are all trying to get from point A to point B.” -David, 49

“All of the people who should be here, but aren’t. Everyone who never got a chance to turn 26. Every sunset. Everything I haven’t written yet.” — Gina Clingan, 26
